But being able to argue or persuade or (in the law rare a rare occasion) concede to a party with an opposing cognitive frame all require a thorough understand of the frame, values, facts, and reasoning on which that frame relies. Thinking completely outside your box and completely inside theirs.
My many year of law practice as an appellate lawyer trained me in thinking “inside the opposing party’s box.” That meant thoroughly understanding the opponent’s “cognitive framework” and the facts that supported the opponents arguments and reasoning. There are ALWAYS some facts that support an alternative interpretation of reality. Appellate law is often a battle of alternate interpretations of reality. Weighing the alternative values and reasoning of the opponents is the job of the court. And the court can’t do it’s job unless BOTH sides have the opportunity to argue their respective cognitive frameworks, facts, and values.
As a psychotherapist with 30 plus years experience, I see the extreme right as terrorists. They can not be reasoned with. As compassionate as your suggestion is, I don’t believe it will work.
I think the only hope progressive people have is at the voting booth which heavily favors republicans and the courts to hear cases brought against the insurrectionists.
I agree with you view of how democrats think. That has to change. The outrage has to become action.
The majority of Americans have to mobilize to retain majority rule.
